Calling all London poets: join the Paterson Poetry Slam at Curzon Soho

O, London poets: we want you! We are looking for London's finest poets to perform their work live at Curzon Soho, inspired by Jim Jarmusch’s latest feature film, Paterson.

On Friday 25 November on the opening night of Paterson, we will be having a special screening followed by a live poetry slam hosted by poet Niall O’Sullivan (who hosts London's premier open mic Poetry Unplugged at the Betsey Trotwood, and teaches Poetry and Performance at London Metropolitan University).

Read on to find out how to participate.

After the opening night screening of the film on Friday 25 November he will host a poetry slam where poets get on stage, perform their work and are judged by the cinema audience.

Poets who are selected to perform will receive a free ticket to the screening. The winning poet will receive a Curzon Classic cinema membership, goodies from the film and of course the acclaim of the crowd!

If you’d like to take part in the poetry slam, tweet @CurzonCinemas and @poetniall to register your interest, or fill in the form below. Niall O'Sullivan will select the performers and contact them to confirm their slot by Friday 18 November.

Paterson is a bus driver in the city of Paterson, New Jersey — they share the name.

Every day, Paterson adheres to a simple routine: he drives his daily route, observing the city as it drifts across his windshield and overhearing fragments of conversation swirling around him; he writes poetry into a notebook; he walks his dog; he stops in a bar and drinks exactly one beer; he goes home to his wife, Laura.

By contrast, Laura’s world is ever changing. New dreams come to her almost daily, each a different and inspired project. Paterson loves Laura and she loves him. He supports her newfound ambitions; she champions his gift for poetry.

The film quietly observes the triumphs and defeats of daily life, along with the poetry evident in its smallest details.

Paterson is directed by the legendary American independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch (Only Lovers Left AliveDown by LawNight on EarthStranger Than Paradise) and stars Adam Driver (GirlsStar Wars: The Force Awakens) and Golshifteh Farahani.

Due to popular demand we were not be able to accommodate all applicants, so if you haven't heard from us unfortunately you've not been selected this time.

However, you can still come to the screening and enjoy the live poetry slam at 6.20pm at Curzon Soho.

Paterson is out in UK cinemas from Friday 25 November.
