ABOUT FUNNY COW

A woman with a funny bone for a backbone

Funny Cow charts the rise to stardom of a female comedienne through the 1970s and 1980s.

Maxine Peake plays the gritty role of ‘Funny Cow’, a comedian who breaks through the glass ceiling of the all-male comedy circuit to rise to stardom.

From her troubled childhood to her turbulent adult relationships, the Funny Cow uses the raw material of her life experiences to bring her unique style of comedy to the stage.

A stand-up comedienne in an all-male world, ‘Funny Cow’ delivers tragedy and comedy in equal measure.

Set against the backdrop of working men’s clubs in the North of England, Funny Cow is both a love-letter to a bygone era and the defiant story of a woman who refuses to give up her dreams.

Starring alongside Maxine Peake are Paddy Considine and Stephen Graham. The film is directed by Adrian Shergold, with an original soundtrack by Richard Hawley.

Funny Cow is released in cinemas on Friday 20 April.

Peake gives it a fierce, blazing energy and holds everything together through the magnetic force of her performance.
